Swedish Health Services Associate Research Assistant in Seattle, Washington


Entry-level position to provide support as needed for basic research, clinical research or research administration activities. Job specifics vary depending on the research area to which the individual is assigned. Responsibilities may include tasks related to patient care and the support of patients on clinical trials. Responsibilities are performed in a timely and accurate manner and with exceptional customer service skills. Skills include excellent communication and problem-solving skills that enable efficient research team operations.

  • Support for document preparation that may include some or all of the following: word-processing, photocopying, distributing, tracking information, editing and proofreading.

  • Support for supply ordering and inventory of supplies as needed.

  • Collects and coordinates information required for staff or investigators which may include some or all of the following: retrieval of information from libraries, medical records or literature searches.

  • Specimen processing which may include some or all of the following: receiving, transferring, processing, storing, tracking/monitoring, or packing/shipping. This includes coordination of and acquisition of external pathology slides/blocks/specimens (serum or tissue) and preparation of study specific lab kits for specimen collections.

  • Support for financial management that may include: managing invoices, billing, data entry, forms completion, and any other tasks identified as needed. Assists in resolving billing issues for patients as instructed. May reconcile charge tickets against patient schedules.

  • Support of data processing and coordination which may include some or all of the following: abstraction of data from medical, administrative or research-related records, coding, data entry, patient screening log completion, and completion of required forms such as study related Case Report Forms.

  • Documents complete and accurate information on all appropriate chart forms. Files/scans patient research related medical records into appropriate records as required.

  • May serve as liaison with external parties such as pharmaceutical representatives, physicians, research coordinators or clinical departments.

  • May act as a courier between various departments for delivery and pick-up of confidential patient material including investigational medications or devices.

  • Completes initial prospectus on newly referred patients for research studies and distributes to the appropriate research team members.

  • Screens and consents study participants into non-significant risk studies. Attends weekly patient or clinic conferences and presents studies, as appropriate.

  • Schedules research related patient care items such as: chemotherapy treatments, clinic appointments, diagnostic tests, blood tests, surgical or non-invasive procedures, admissions, and any other research related procedure per research study as directed by the research team per protocol procedures.

  • Coordinates research nurse, treatment center, and clinic schedules to determine physician and clinic RN availability for patient research related appointments.

  • Coordinates acquisition of outside radiology films and reports for nurse/physician review of patients being evaluated for research protocols.

  • Supports maintenance and tracking of research related equipment, such as EKG machines and centrifuges to ensure adherence to regulatory procedures.

  • Answers multiple phone lines and triages calls to the appropriate research team member demonstrating; a) decision-making ability regarding appropriate routing of calls, and b) ability to maintain a helpful and responsive demeanor. Takes messages when necessary and relays accurate pertinent information to the appropriate research team member.

  • Functions as an essential member of the Research Team. Accepts responsibility for all aspects of the position. Establishes and adjusts priorities based on study related responsibilities and patient care issues.

  • Organizes work to perform multiple functions concurrently, demonstrating ability to respond appropriately to multiple requests from staff, patients, physicians, etc.

  • Recognizes and responds to patient, facility, and environmental emergencies. Acts as a resource during emergencies.

  • Demonstrates support for the Swedish Research Center goals and programs.

  • Provides general office support including document scanning, faxing, filing, shredding, mailing, transfer of documents, shipping, delivery of confidential patient material or mail.

  • Uses SRC computer systems efficiently and effectively. Able to learn new computer applications as they evolve (ie. Epic, Study Manager, any other EMR support systems).

  • Participates in other duties as requested and remains flexible at all times.

Required qualification:

  • 6 months prior experience.

Preferred qualification:

  • Additional coursework in science or healthcare, or enrolled in scientific/healthcare course of study.
